FAQ

Why Orpheus did something you didn't expect, and what to do about it.

Radio started after my song finished, and nobody ran /radio

Someone started a radio station on this server at some point and it was never stopped. Orpheus saves stations, and they carry on whenever the queue runs out, including after a restart. After Orpheus leaves an empty channel, it keeps a station for 24 hours, so it starts again if a queue runs out on that server within the day. Use /stop or /clear to end it, or press "Stop the station" on the dashboard's Radio page.

I turned autoplay on but the music just stopped

Autoplay lets the queue end when it has nothing to go on. That happens when:

  • it can't work out any artist from recent tracks,
  • Deezer has nothing for those artists and there's no earlier pool to fall back on,
  • everything left in its pool is blocked on this server, or
  • Orpheus couldn't find any of the songs it tried on YouTube or SoundCloud.

Queue something by a well-known artist and it should carry on from there next time.

Why is autoplay playing this artist? I was listening to someone else

Autoplay carries on from the artists behind the last five songs people asked for in this sitting, so an artist from a few songs back can still be in the mix, even after a break of up to two hours. Songs that radio or autoplay picked don't count. Half the pool is related artists, so you'll also hear names nobody asked for. Earlier artists stay in the mix until newer requests push them out of those five songs.

Autoplay takes each artist from a "- Topic" channel's name, or from the title when it looks like "Artist - Song". If neither works, it uses the uploader's name, so a song from a channel with an unusual name can send autoplay after that name. See What it starts from.

I blocked a song but it still played

Blocks only stop Orpheus picking a song for radio, autoplay or /liked play. If someone plays it with /play, /search, a playlist or the dashboard, it plays.

The other possibility is that the block was saved under a different name. That can happen with an upload that has no artist in its title, from a channel that isn't the artist's, when Orpheus couldn't confirm the artist on Deezer. See How Orpheus tells tracks apart.

I liked a lot of songs but the radio sounds the same

Likes change the odds for songs that are already in the station's pool. They don't add new songs straight away. A liked track with weight 3 is three times as likely to be picked as an unliked one. In a pool of up to 300 songs, that can be hard to notice at first. Likes also steer what gets added when the pool runs low, which happens gradually. More detail in Likes and blocks.

I pressed Like on the wrong song. Can I undo it?

/liked remove takes it off your liked list. The extra weight your like gave the song on that server stays, because Orpheus doesn't keep track of who added it. See Can one person spam Like? for how far a weight can go.

Are my likes shared between servers?

Half of them. Your liked list follows you everywhere. The boost a like gives a song on radio and autoplay only applies on the server where you pressed it, and it's shared with everyone there.

Not this artist blocked a name I don't recognise

Orpheus reads the artist from the song's title when the title looks like "Artist - Song", or from the channel when it's a "- Topic" or VEVO channel. When the upload doesn't say who the artist is, such as an upload from a lyrics channel, Orpheus looks the song up on Deezer and blocks the artist Deezer lists for it. It only does that when Deezer's matches for the song agree on one artist. If they don't, it blocks just the song and tells you it couldn't tell who the artist is.

When Orpheus was updated, it moved blocks made by older versions over to the artist's name. Where it couldn't work out the artist, the old entry keeps the uploader's name, with "VEVO", "Official" and "- Topic" trimmed off. Someone with Manage Server can undo any block with /unblock.

I can't use /unblock, /autoplay, /247 or /dj

Those commands need Manage Server by default. Someone with Manage Server can open them up to other roles in Server Settings, under Integrations.

Why can't I skip?

Either you're not in the same voice channel as Orpheus, or the server has a DJ role and other people are listening. You can always skip a song you queued yourself. There's no skip vote. See Controls and permissions.

/play said "Nothing found", but the song is on YouTube

Orpheus refuses uploads that look like a different version (remix, sped up, live, karaoke and so on), the wrong length, or someone else's song. If the only copies it found were like that, you get "Nothing found". If you want one of those versions, include the word, like /play query: ribs lorde slowed. /search lets you pick a YouTube or SoundCloud result yourself, and Orpheus queues it as you picked it.

Spotify links need a matching copy on YouTube or SoundCloud. If Orpheus can't find one that matches the title, artist and length, it doesn't queue anything, and it tells you. Try /play with the song name and artist, or /search.

My Spotify playlist import stopped at 200 songs

Orpheus can only read the first 200 tracks of a Spotify playlist, and the import reply says so when a playlist reaches that limit. YouTube playlists can go further, up to 500 tracks per import.

Why did Orpheus leave?

Everyone left the voice channel and 24/7 mode is off, so it waited a minute and left. It kept what was playing and queued for 24 hours: use /play in that server and it offers to bring those tracks back. See Orpheus keeps your queue for a day. Turn on 24/7 with /247 enabled: True if you want it to stay.

Everyone came back but the music is still paused

If a person paused it before everyone left, Orpheus leaves it paused. It only resumes by itself when it was the one that paused, in 24/7 mode. Press Resume.

Orpheus stopped and said the last 3 tracks failed

Three songs in a row couldn't be played, which usually means a music source is having problems. Orpheus keeps your queue. Wait a bit and press play or use /play. The status page shows whether Orpheus itself is up.

Why does the player card keep jumping to the bottom?

When chat pushes the card out of view, Orpheus reposts it at the bottom so the buttons are easy to reach. While it's still visible, it edits the same message.

Can other people see my /queue or /lyrics?

No. Those replies are only visible to you.

Why did my filter turn off?

Effects take several times more work to play than plain music, so Orpheus doesn't leave them on forever. An effect switches off when the queue finishes, and after 3 hours of continuous use. When the audio server is very busy, Orpheus switches off the effects that have been on longest first. Orpheus says which happened in the channel, except when someone stopped the music. Run /filter to turn it back on. See When effects switch off or wait.

Why can't I add a filter right now?

The audio server is busy, or a lot of other servers are using effects on it, so new effects wait for a few minutes. The music keeps playing as normal. Turning a filter off still works.

Does anything cost money?

No. There's no paid plan. If you'd like to help pay for the servers, there's a Ko-fi page, and a donation doesn't unlock anything.

Is there an Orpheus Discord server?

Yes, join it here. A lofi station plays around the clock in the Lofi voice channel. #status shows whether Orpheus is working and gives a heads-up before planned maintenance, and #changelog gets every release as it goes out. There are channels for help, suggestions and bug reports too.
