Features · Autoplay and radio

Music that follows what your server plays

Press Like and your server hears a song more often. Press Not for me and radio and autoplay stop picking it. Autoplay carries on when the queue runs out, and /radio starts a station. The rules behind both are below.

Autoplay

It starts from the songs people asked for

Autoplay carries on from the artists behind the last five songs people requested in the latest sitting. A gap of more than two hours between requests starts a new sitting, and autoplay never looks back further than 12 hours.

Autoplay leaves out songs that it or a radio station picked, so it doesn't drift further from your taste each time the queue runs out. An artist behind two or three of those songs counts for more than an artist behind one.

When it starts, Orpheus tells the channel which artists it's carrying on from, and every song it picks says Autoplay where a person's name would be.

Off until someone turns it on

Use /autoplay enabled: True, the Autoplay button on the player card, or the “Keep going when the queue ends” switch on the dashboard. It's a server setting, so it stays on for everyone.

It follows what you add

Songs you add while autoplay is running go after its picks. Next time the queue runs out they're the newest requests, and a new artist among them makes Orpheus rebuild the pool.

Stopping it

Turn it off, or use /stop. /clear lets the current song play out, and autoplay starts again from there if it's still on.

Step by step

How autoplay picks the next song

  1. 1The queue runs outThe last song finishes or someone skips it with nothing behind it. If the server has a saved radio station, the station carries on instead.
  2. 2It reads the last five requestsIt takes the artists behind the last five songs people asked for. Newer requests count for more, and songs autoplay or radio picked don't count.
  3. 3It builds a poolYou hear the artists you asked for and artists like them. The pool holds up to 300 songs from Deezer: half are those artists' top tracks, and the rest come from up to 10 related artists.
  4. 4It picks at random, with rulesLiked songs come up more often, and Orpheus never picks a blocked song or artist. A song that played recently has to wait, and no more than 2 of any 5 picks share an artist.
  5. 5It checks the copyOrpheus finds each pick on YouTube, or on SoundCloud if YouTube has no good copy, and checks it the same way as /play. Autoplay keeps three picks queued ahead.

Orpheus reuses the pool each time the queue runs out, as long as the artists haven't changed much. It rebuilds the pool when a new artist shows up among the last five requests, or when more than half of the artists it came from have dropped out.

Radio

Pick a station from a menu, or name an artist

/radio on its own opens a menu only you can see, with stations sorted into moods, genres, scenes, decades, country charts and artists. /radio station: suggests stations as you type, and /radio artist: Drake builds one around an artist. Starting a station clears the queue, lets the current song finish, and then the station takes over.

A Deezer genre gets that genre's chart, and a chart station plays Deezer's top 100 for that country. Moods, scenes and decades come from Deezer playlists about them. You can also type something that isn't in the menu, like “rainy day”, and Orpheus builds the station the same way.

A station won't repeat any of the last 200 songs it played, or fewer on a small station. Orpheus saves it, so it carries on through restarts until someone stops it, clears the queue or starts another. It also ends when Orpheus left an empty channel a day ago and the station hasn't picked a song since.

Likes and Not for me

Your server steers it with two buttons

Radio and autoplay go on two things your server builds up: a number for every song, and a list of blocks.

Like

Every song starts with a weight of 1, and each like adds 2, up to 10. Picks are random in proportion to weight, so a song at 3 is three times as likely to come up as one nobody liked.

Weight after each like
  1. No likes1
  2. 1 like3
  3. 2 likes5
  4. 3 likes7
  5. 4 likes9
  6. 5 or more10

A like also saves the song to your own liked list, which follows you to every server. When a station runs low on songs, it grows from artists related to the server's most-liked tracks.

Not for me

The button under the player card, or /dislike, does four things at once.

  1. 1Blocks the song on this server.
  2. 2Sets its weight to 0.
  3. 3Takes it out of the current station's pool.
  4. 4Skips it.

/dislike reason: Not this artist blocks everything by that artist as well. Blocks last until someone runs /unblock. None of this stops anyone playing the song on purpose with /play, /search or a playlist.

Add Orpheus to your server

It asks for seven permissions, and Administrator isn't one of them. You can remove it from your server at any time.
