Your server
24/7, empty channels and restarts
What Orpheus does when everyone leaves the voice channel, what 24/7 mode changes and what survives a restart.
For what 24/7 gives your server at a glance, see 24/7 in every server, free.
When everyone leaves
This is what happens with 24/7 off, which is the default. Bots in the channel don't count as listeners.
When the last person leaves, Orpheus waits 60 seconds. If somebody comes back in that time, nothing happens. If the channel is still empty after 60 seconds, Orpheus posts a message saying it left because everyone had gone, and leaves.
Orpheus also checks when a track starts, so if it gets started in a channel that's already empty, the same 60-second countdown applies.
Orpheus keeps your queue for a day
Before it leaves, Orpheus keeps the track that was playing and everything queued behind it, along with who added each one. The leaving message says how many tracks it kept. If there was nothing to keep, it doesn't mention a queue.
To get them back:
- Within 24 hours, use
/playin that server. It plays what you asked for as normal. - Orpheus then sends you a message only you can see, offering the kept tracks, with a Bring them back button.
- Press it while you're in the voice channel with Orpheus. The kept tracks go in after whatever is already queued, and the reply tells you how many came back. If a track won't load, Orpheus searches for it again and leaves it out if the search finds nothing.
A few details:
- Only
/playmakes the offer, and only once it has queued something./search,/playlist play,/radioand the dashboard don't. - The offer is made once for each kept queue, even if Orpheus restarts in between, so you won't be asked on every song. If nothing is playing when you press the button, the queue is still kept and the next
/playoffers it again. - A kept queue can only be brought back once.
- Each server keeps one queue at a time. The next time Orpheus leaves an empty channel, it replaces the old one. If nothing was playing or queued then, the old one is thrown away.
- After 24 hours, Orpheus deletes the kept queue.
- The track that was playing starts again from the beginning. Loop mode, filters and a one-off volume aren't kept.
Orpheus keeps a radio station separately. If one was running, Orpheus keeps it for 24 hours, and if a queue runs out on that server within that time, the station picks up again. See How long a station lasts.
24/7 mode
Turn it on with /247 enabled: True or the "Stay in the channel" switch on the dashboard's Settings page. Run /247 with no option to see the current setting. By default /247 needs Manage Server.
If Orpheus isn't in a voice channel when you turn it on with /247, it joins the one you're in and stays there. Start something with /play, or a station that keeps going with /radio. If you're not in a voice channel, join one first. If Orpheus can't get into your channel, the reply says which permission is missing.
With 24/7 on, an empty channel doesn't make Orpheus leave:
- 60 seconds after the last person leaves, it pauses. It keeps the queue, the current track and where you were in it.
- As soon as somebody joins again, it resumes, with no wait.
- If a person paused it before everyone left, it stays paused when people come back. Orpheus only resumes what it paused itself.
If you turn 24/7 off while Orpheus is sitting in an empty channel, it leaves straight away. It keeps the queue and any station the same way as when everyone leaves, and the reply to /247 says how many tracks it kept instead of posting a separate message.
Restarts and updates
Orpheus saves each server's session every 15 seconds: the voice channel, the text channel, the current track and position, whether it's paused, and the queue.
Short restarts
The audio server keeps playing for up to 5 minutes while the bot restarts. When the bot comes back it takes control of the music that was still playing and puts the rest of your queue back behind it. Most updates look like a gap of a few seconds, or nothing at all.
Longer outages
If the audio server restarted too, or the bot was gone for more than 5 minutes, the music has stopped. When things come back, Orpheus decides server by server whether to return:
- With 24/7 on, it rejoins the channel, even if nothing was queued.
- With 24/7 off, it rejoins only if people are still in the voice channel and there was something to play.
- Otherwise, or if the server or channel no longer exists, Orpheus forgets the session. If Orpheus is still sitting in the voice channel with nothing to play, it leaves.
When it does come back, it restores the track at the saved position, so it can jump back by up to 15 seconds. It keeps the track paused if it was paused, and restores the queue. If a track won't load, Orpheus searches for it again and drops it if the search finds nothing.
What isn't saved
The saved session doesn't include loop mode, filters, or a volume someone set with /volume without remember. After a longer outage, expect those back at their defaults. The volume goes back to the server's default volume.
Orpheus saves radio stations separately, so they carry on after any restart. Autoplay's pool of candidate songs isn't saved. The next time autoplay needs it, Orpheus rebuilds it from the songs people asked for in the latest sitting. See What it starts from.
You can check the status page to see whether Orpheus is up.
